Total War!!!

1/2/2006

I think it's appropriate to have a new blog for our current "alternative" addiction :)

Finally was able to play the games (medieval and rome) last week after having the games discs with me for almost a month... I am back to video gaming madness (my recent record so far is until 4 am!!!)... whew!!! This is all Salubri's fault :)

I skipped medieval after 2 days of playing it and went on to Rome... some learning experiences to date :

1) Hoplites (with the phalanx ability) rock! I can't wait to play as Greeks to be able to have a battle line full of these "men" (you have all watched alexander :)

2) Sometimes, it's better to exterminate a population. Crucify! I learned this the hard way after getting booted out of Carthage just after I won it via a very bloody siege.

3) Prime cities captured - Carthage, Athens, Corinth, Rhodes... next in line is Jerusalem, and I have an army doing nothing but walk and find battles in eastern Europe. Funny listening to the general's speech claiming they are great Romans... he has mostly mercenaries in his command (with hoplites of course). My goal is to have 10 provinces in the general area of my capital, with the rest of the 40 or so coming from Africa, Middle East, Asia Minor, Western Europe. I don't like to go towards Spain for some reason...

4) Survived my first encounter against elephants when I assaulted Carthage itself... yeah you guessed it, Hoplites :)

5) Some captains give better speaches than generals :)

I would be considered as one of the fortunate few who haven't watched Alexander so I couldn't quite relate on that. :P

i've actually let go of the southeastern regions of the map and focussed on the eastern half of the region. i've wiped out the julii faction (as well as egyptian and greek cities) and i'm closing in on the scipii capital.

i've been able to broker peace with the spaniards for a few regions in the east. the east has been too much of a problem with the riots/uprisings - i don't need that for now so i'm letting the spaniards deal with em for now. :)

Brutii... rich romans...

I play Julii... cause I like red...

I took Jerusalem, because I like the city... now I know sort of why people go there and lay claim and why it's such a hotspot... educational game :)

I am currently fighting against Greeks, Macedonians, Carthaginians, Numidians and Egyptians... and I have the Brutii and the Senate Armies parked at my doorstep... better look for some allies and make some friends :)

I'll just give some payback to the Pharoah at a later date.

"Hey barbarian, you want Jerusalem?"

"They must offer terms" - Balian

looks like balian has a hangover from his stint in kingdom of heaven. :P

i thought you were referring to medieval total war when you asked me about jerusalem. but the same thing goes... it's a rich province that's why people want it badly.

it's much harder to defend in medieval since there you'll be fending off 3 islamic factions and all the christian world who wants a piece of jerusalem and the rich provinces around it. as if that's not hard enough the armies attacking you will be sanctioned by the pope and will be composed of well armed crusaders and frenzied fanatics. yup... hold on to it long enough and you'll get to see different kinds of knightly orders face to face. from the knights of santiago to the knights templars. yun nga lang... they will be fighting for the other side. :D

sigismund, it's a PC game.

it's a good "nudge" to get you into fantasy also :)

i restarted the campaign na lang. getting too confused with all that's happening across the whole map. this time i will be concentrating on the southwestern territories. will probably bash in the senate so as i don't have to fear being an outcast! lol

Salubri said...

oh careful that you don't strike at rome until you're in a position to overpower the other factions. i'm sure you've figured out that once you take control of rome the other two factions will be hot on your heels.

kaya nga i don't like playing as rome eh. :P

as a side note, i think that there is an event where the entirety of rome (people and senate?) just falls in love with you. (it probably has something to do with your fulfilling missions and gaining popularity with the people) the event says something like "Rome loves you and if you march towards the city now they will accept you as emperor." sadly i failed to march an army to rome that day since everyone else was out in the far reaches of the empire gaining glory thru conquest.

nagawa ko na yon! eliminated julii and the senate. however, have had problem with scipii coz each time nagrevolt yung scipii city which i've conquered - balik siya to being scipii and NOT rebels! langya talaga. which is why i've restarted. key is to kill off all the other factions and surround rome hahaha!

really? now i haven't seen that yet.

lesther gave me a copy of barbarian invasion. i'll install it today. :D

Salubri said...

okay. barbarian invasion is definitely alot harder. each time a barbarian faction is down to 1 settlement they can choose to pack it up and leave... this will give them 5 or more full armies. :P same thing happens when you wipe out their last settlement. eek.

oh and the era is pretty close to medieval na... cavalry is on the rise.

Must... resist... Aaarrrgghhh!!!

Balian the Blacksmith said...

resist resist pa... bili ka na ng kopya... meron sa 50th Avenue sa Galleria...

I actually bought a new PC because of this game :)

I have a new highlight last night... 2 generals (who were out mercenary hunting) with their bodyguards against 5 regiments of Greeks... panalo pa... buti na lang all infantry sila. Just took care of the missile units via hit-and-run tactic and ran away from the 2 80-man hoplite regiments

sayang walang replay :)

Kyuzo said...

Checked Data Blitz wala silang stock. Magkano ba original copy?

Balian the Blacksmith said...

wala na stock ang Data Blitz... I bought their last copy which came all the way from their branch in Paranaque yata. And it was the collection set - Medieval, the expansion for Medieval, and then Rome.

Salubri said...

there should be an option to save the replays of your battles... try checking the battle report for it.

this feature came in when they made medieval.

i also found out that you don't need governors for provinces close to your capital city. some of my cities/towns just have 2 town watches. for distant provinces, you'll need to put in 1 or 2 governors and lots of troops. destroy all those buildings that are not roman :)

highlights of my last weekend gaming :

1) it's a great view when you are battling from the inside of Rhodes... "look, it's the ocean...how nice"

2) chased 3 chariots with 3 cavalry units around Rhodes outside the walls... it was not a routing unit and I was the attacker (sallying out) so I had to destroy it. After several minutes of not being able to catch-up to the chariots (heavy cavalry kasi), I ordered my whole army (ctrl+A) to run and attack it. And then I zoomed into the chariots and followed it close-up with the camera. In the end, parand pinatid lang ng peasant yung isa and then the other two were rammed head-on by another heavy cavalry unit...That sequence reminded me of the Iliad...

3) Speaking of the Iliad, one general of mine in his pre-battle speech (against Gauls) mentioned something about "effeminate Greeks" :)

4) Brutii are filthy rich... I'm in 210 BC and I have over 2 million denarii in my treasury, 46 provinces, 9 armies running all-over the place and respectable garrisons in most cities... I'm a Greco-Roman Empire!

5) Close-ups in battles are cool... sometimes I order everything at the beginning of a battle and just watch after... lalo na pag outnumbered heavily and opposing army

6) wardogs are vicious...never used them before, I will now, always...

7) what does the arcani unit do?

high noon said...

balian - are you spending money on anything??? 2 million denarii? wow.

i'd upgrade all my cities. destroy all buildings where the picture is not the same as the romans. which in turn leads to more spending (start from trader again!)

egyptian axemen can kill an awful lot. wardogs are ok. incendiary pigs din ata ok. i haven't tried lighting them up but that should be fun! hehehe

ok question for me - how the heck do you destroy the HQ buildings? di siya pwede destroy so i'm thinking of using onagers to attack them with flaming balls!

high noon said...

that's in the actual battle sequence - after destroying the walls/gates.

Salubri said...

i don't think you can destroy the governor's buildings.

2million denarii? how the heck did you achieve that... i never get more than 20k at any one time. though that might be because i have the worlds largest armies that the ground shakes when we march. harhar!

high noon said...

sorry my friends - it is possible to destroy HQ buildings! i've done it against memphis and the other egyptian city close to it. you have to destroy the walls and towers first - then move the onagers close enough to hit the HQ. don't use the flaming missiles though especially against egyptian cities - they're made of MUD! di nasusunog! lol.

i have around 500K - pero i destroy buildings so nababawasan. i also bribe a lot of roving armies. 2,000,000 - ibig sabihin halos alang spending si balian.

my problem is that the people love me and the senate has once again outlawed me. lol

Salubri said...

kaya nga ayoko maging roman. :P

you have to bow down to the politicians(dejavu? :P).

back on topic:
that's too much work... i think i'll live with the 1 point of culture penalty by not destroying the HQ.

disappointed ako sa barbarian invasion... you're plagued by worthless generals... unlike in rome where you can build academies that produce good retinues. :D

hopefully my new computer comes in tomorrow. finally... after eons my celeron 366 will retire. :D

high noon said...

i think it's also better to exterminate each time you conquer. destroying army buildings leaves that city no choice but to raise town watch or ordinary militia. easier to wipe out if they kick you out.

it's also critical that once you take over a city, you have to leave a sizeable force for several turns. you'll notice that settlement will be rebellious however, once your buildings start getting built - they'll turn yellow/green. after that, leave a governor and a couple of troops then march off :)

high noon said...

guess what - i found out that even if the HQ building is destroyed during the siege, it's listed as damaged after you take over the settlement. the only choice is to repair that damned thing!

Salubri said...

i usually enslave and only exterminate if the settlement would pose problems. slaves appear as a resource near your city. i guess it has a positive effect on trade and public disorder is lessened as the slaves are transfered to other cities with governors... also this helps your other cities expand in size much faster. :D

im the meanderer... im 30 years old... and im... a total war: rome addict... hehehe...
that game kept up at night for a about a month... i couldnt even think straight at work... i could wait to get home and try out a new strategy...
my first campaign was scipii... coz theyre blue... but they start out up against carthage... and i had to face a lot of those elephants... best solution was flaming arrows... the elephants will panic and start stampeding on nearby units... friend or foe... it been to fill your army with infantry... some skirmishers and archers... and the a cavalry and an onager... i finished the game without ever setting foot on athens... those phalanx are tough bastards... i let the brutii deal with them...
then i tried eygpt... they start out with alexanderia, thebes and mephis... which are among the richest city at the time... there was slight change in tactics... my armies were mostly axemen, archers and chariots... it was like playing khemri sa warhammer fantasy...
then i got a copy of barbarian invasion... hehehe... there was paradigm shift... i started relying on cavalry archers... hit and run... ala woodelves hehehe...
plus you got to see the night the battles... its a totally different experience...
its best to exterminate... rvolts can be so annoy at times... another thins i enjoyed about the game were the retinue and their traits... its quite amusing...
plus you could actually play total war in three ways... as an rts game you could automate the govenors and just focus on the battles... or you could automate the battle and focus on empire building... or you could play everything... its a feat that no other game has done so far...
now i hear that there developing an update for total war medieval... improving on the the desing of rome total war...
grabe... puyat nanaman ako nito... hehehe...

I wasnt concious about spending or targetting the 2M denarii at all...

these are the things I did that lead me to it :
1) easy setting
2) brutii
3) ignored the italian peninsula and conquered the greek and macedonian cities quick
4) sold map information as often as possible
5) designated only a few cities for military purposes, other legions were mostly mercenaries. green din naman so coherent looking pa rin.
6) built buildings used for trade - trader, ports, roads...
7) mostly temple of Mercury for settlements
8) limited military build-up... and I disband units when inactive or can do nothing
9) slow and steady expansion... I often let 2 or 3 turns without mobilizing
10) crucify the population every time I conquer a settlement
11) when a settlement is too populated, I move the entire garrison out, settlement turns to a rebel settlement, I siege and conquer it again,... kaching!!!
12) get trade agreements
13) I turn down marriage proposals to daughters if suitor's qualities are not ok
14) set AI spending to low
15) moved the capital constantly so that it will be in the middle of my empire or near my cash cow settlements para konti corruption expense
16) dont bother with the settlements north... poor settlements
17) get carthage and thapsus in africa and no more
18) get an alliance with egypt and maintain it as long as possible. Whenever I see any other roman faction's units going towards an egptian settlement or unit, I block, assasinate... just in case they are thinking of picking a fight with the egyptians...
19) built stone walls only... the better your walls the better the sieging army's siege towers... parang repeating bolt throwers... ubos ang halos isang century na nagbabantay sa walls
20) tranferred positive effect ancilliaries from old family members to new ones

basta, ... with the effects of the wonders and all, I was netting at least 30,000 denarii a turn at some point... tapos ganun na hanggang matapos...

nagumpisa uli ako ng brutii... will see if I can make another million or two...

accountant eh :)
