HGR Journal Entry No. 008...

START OF TRANSMISSION...

July 22, 2006...

The Venue : Neutral Grounds Robinsons Galleria
The Gamers : Balian, Salubri, The Meanderer, Sigismund, Justin, Kyuzo with special appearance by Oberon

Neutral Grounds! Its been a long while since we last played here (last entry was dated January 2006). And the place was bigger then. Despite the intimate setting, we played on! Results are as follows:

1st Game
Combatants : Balian (Steel Falcons) vs. Salubri (Deathwing)
Mission : Cleanse Level : Omega
Highlights :

Saw this on Turn 4 where Salubri's Deathwing was on the march with his assault termies slowly but surely made progress into Balian's deployment quarter. But combined heroics from Balian's librarian, tac squads, razorbacks, landspeeder and dreadnaughts provided enough suppressive fire to wither the assualt termie advance. No need to count the points on this one. Balian's Steel Falcons won that day.

Some Pics :

Somewhere in Turn 4...

You Shall Not Pass!!!

2nd Game
Combatants : Kyuzo (Dark Eldar) vs. Sigismund (Black Templars)
Mission : Seek and Destroy Level : Alpha
Highlights :

This one was interesting. Most of Kyuzo's Dark Lances and Disintegrators either missed or wasn't able to blow up any of Sigismund's vehicles on the first couple of turns thus enabling Sigismund's BT to rush to my deployment in three turns using his rhinos. Some fancy maneuvering of his four rhinos thinking he can pull the "Where's the Emperor's Champion and his squad?" delayed the inevitable but only slightly, as Kyuzo has already stretched his forces to the right flank and is too late to send any counter support to his beleaguered troops. Wyches didn't do much today as initiative on the assault was hard to recover at the very first turn. True to form, Dark Eldar went all or nothing on this scenario, with the Black Templar crusade winning over these bloodthirsty pirates at the very end.

Some Pics:

"Where's the Emperor's Champion?"...+P

Vindicator about to get some haywire love...

Some last turn heroics didn't make the difference

A pleasant surprise to see Oberon pass by to see the games (well, mostly Sigis and his intricately thought out movement phase which took about an hour... +P) as well as how the store looks like now, but soon went ahead. After the games and some goodbyes to Love (+P), the gang went to Quattro for a quick dinner and an exchange of some lively banter.

2006 Fantasy GT...

June 11, 2006...

Fantasy GT 2006! This year was different considering it was held in a new venue at the clubhouse of Bonifacio Heights here at the Fort. Despite the venue being a little out of the way, it was a joint effort from everyone who attended that all those who wanted to join could be brought to the venue to play.

Players in attendance were: Sunny (Wood Elves), Carlos (Kemmler List), Mark (Dwarf), Chris (Empire), Patrick (Skaven), Joel (Vampire Counts), Ross (Empire), Raf (O&G), and myself (Dark Elves).

Other noteables were Ronald and Freddie who organized the tourney, Lito who gave all out support in attendance and even in the assistance with the food run =), the Cua bros who still passed by to watch even if they missed the start, Francis (aka Sabaw) who went to watch Sunny's wood elf tactics, and Larry who made a special appearance (great terrain pieces dude!).

Another noteable difference in this year's GT was that we were able to play 4 scenarios in just 8 hours! The funky 2nd scenario was a blast as some high-leadership characters failed their terror tests (noteable to Marks Ld9 hero rolling a 12 =P), while lowly Ld5 Skaven passed easily.

Special thanks to Raf who flew all the way from Iloilo just to play. Our final round match was the most memorable to date. It was still fun even if it wasn't a draw. ;)

In the end it was the giving out of prizes. Best Painted award went to Mark. Best General award was given to Chris. And Overall Champion went to Joel. Great games guys!

2006 Fantasy GT in Bonifacio Heights

Congrats to the winners and kudos to Ronald, Freddie and Gelo (who had to be in Subic that day) for a well-organized GT (complete with tourney kits!).

Next up will the be 2006 40k GT. Hope to see you guys on the 24th of June. I will mention the details of that event in another post soon.

Mini-tourney At NG Galleria...

BEGIN TRANSMISSION...

May 7, 2006...

Small gathering of players to play 1000pt mini-tourney at NG Galleria. Three out of the eight players are 101st Regulars with beefcake playing librarian duties as tourney organizer. The eight player roster are as follows:

Balian - Steel Falcons
Kyuzo - Dark Eldar
Midnight - Space Wolves
EJ - Tau
Zeb - Necrons
Gelo - Lost and the Damned
Joel - Space Marines
Willy(?) - Ultramarines

The mini-tourney played three scenarios with Beefcake plugging in some funky weather conditions as well as individual player objectives forcing the players to think on their feet.

My three rounds felt like my regular Saturday games of late. My first round against Balian's Steel Falcons was a fun experience where Balian had a slight edge on VP. Second round was against Midnight's Space Wolves where I was able to edge him out on VP, with weather conditions playing a factor in the outcome. Third round was against Joel where we both were not able to breakthrough to each other's deployment zones but with my army almost decimated to the last man. Great games gentlemen! :D

In the end, it was Gelo who won out on VP to take the overall win. Congrats GeloMan! Hope to come across your mutants soon! :P

Some pics for posterity...

Gelo starting to quote some of his famous lines

Librarian Beefcake paposing-posing lang =P

"Uhm boss, I think were surrounded..."

Balian waiting for the next round...

Blaze of Glory Ultramarine fashion...=P

Some tables were intense...

...while some were just plain exciting. Joke. =P

After some inquiry with the NG staff were we able to gather that playing outside the store at the atrium can be arranged given a proper lead time for the securing of a permit. Will discuss this in detail with the organizers for the next tourney if not the GT itself.

Neutral Grounds Galleria...

March 25, 2006...

FYI. NG Galleria's new location at the 2nd(?) floor opened. It's smaller, and a little cramped if you wanna put in a table for warhammer games, but doable if you ask me. Being welcome to play is another matter. A lot of warhammer stuff are still displayed on the shelves and a big part of the shopfront has army boxes on display. Never had the opportunity to talk to Freddie about this since he was busy attending to- and participating in a card tourney. Things were a bit chaotic considering the just-moved-in feel of the place. Will come back for updates.

That's all to report for now...

HGR Journal Entry No. 005 - Troop Movement

Shink1m, The Meanderer, Balian and Salubri showed up at NG Galleria last saturday, March 4.
Warhammer Fantasy was the chosen game for the day.

1st match: Shink1m's KDL went up against Balian's Bretonians with KDL walking away victorious.
2nd match: Salubri's Bretonians VS The Meanderer's Wood Elf warhost. The Meanderer miscalculated his flee reactions which left his units immobile for 1 turn. Salubri took advantage of this with cavalry charges all around. Victory for Bretonians.

Good games guys.

mental note to self: when asked by a pretty young girl with long legs and fair skin, if you smoke, reply with: "Oh I'm smoking now girl!" lolz.

where's a smoker when you need one...

HGR Journal Entry 004...

January 28, 2006...

Two of the Regulars were able to go today to play some 40k games after a long drought. Results are as follows:

1st Game : Balian (13th Company) vs. Kyuzo (Dark Eldar)
Misson : 2000pts Recon Alpha
Result : Win for Dark Eldar with one full warrior squad able to walk to the 13th Company's deployment zone.
Highlights Include : Balian's Rune Priest evading the torment of the Archon's Crucible, but failed two psychic tests resulting in two wounds that killed himself and not able to teleport a squad of Grey Slayers to the Dark Eldar deployment zone.

2nd Game : Kyuzo (Dark Eldar) vs. Owen (Sisters of Battle)
Mission : 2000pts Seek and Destroy Omega
Result : Win for Sisters of Battle
Highlights Include : It was the battle of the elites when Kyuzo's Wyches and Incubi tried to stop the Sisters Repentia rush to the center. Dark Eldar forces were able to wipe out the 20-man repentia but was left out in the open for withering fire from the Sisters. Arco-flagellants proved very devastating and swept the Dark Eldar left flank.

Balian and I called it a day early and left Galleria and had a beer at Ñubar in Golf City. Tokwa't Baboy was great, highly recommended. ;)

Until the next...

All Is Quiet In the HGR Front…

I guess this would not officially count into the HGR Journal entries. Things have been a bit quiet lately. It's been two straight Saturdays that the Galleria Regulars have taken on separate paths. Here's a quick rundown to give at least an idea of what the 101st have been doing when they're not playing Warhammer...

- Midnight took some time off to revisit an old hobby of his, which is golf. When the guy's not playing space wolves or vampire counts, he tries to get the exercise in swing at the ball and walking to where it landed just to swing at it again. Just heard he played Warhammer 40k at Hobby Haven in Katipunan with fellow players EJ and Ayo.

- Kyuzo is currently taking some time off to clean his room (and still at it ) and reorganizing his tabletop hobby stuff. So his Dark Elves, Dark Eldar and Menoth figs are neatly packed in boxes for the moment. He's also been away from the billiard scene for quite some time now (see HGR Journal Entry No. 2) but will be playing again for sure. Just recently he went on a sojourn to visit the boyz in UP-CFA to play a game of Warmachine as well as spend some quiet time with them at da Shak to get up to speed on the boyz.

- Balian has been busy painting his Bretonnians, Steel Falcons and 13th Company when he's not playing in Galleria. He's also rediscovering the joys of computer games and is very much into Total War(see related thread). As of this writing, he was last reported doing some "PC repair".

- Salubri, when not playing Bretonnians or Ultramarines is very much an painter at heart and been recently addicted to the Total War computer game. He's currently in the middle of a 12-weekend seminar so his playing time on Saturdays are affected. Just reported playing the Total War game very late at night and have been playtesting the Warmachine game system on Sundays with Meanderer and Kim.

- Meanderer is into mountain climbing when not playing his Daemonhunters or Wood Elves. Last reported playtesting the Warmachine game system on Sundays with Salubri and Kim.

- Sigismund has been busy at work on Saturdays or his wedding preparations for this year. Lately, I believe he's ready to play 40k once more. He's good to go whether its Black Templars, Iron Warriors, Necrons, Tau, or whatever army he's got. ;)

Ave General!

I foresee many more sleepless nights to come. No folks you're not looking at the latest warhammer pc game. They may look like bretonians but they are actually better. They're the knights out of the pages of your history book. ;) So without further delay (who am I kidding... you're probably not reading this anymore. lolz.) here's a few pics from the revamped Medieval: Total War 2.

HGR Journal Entry 003...

January 7, 2005

Only three Regulars showed up that day and fantasy was the agreed game of the day. Results are as follows:

Balian(Brets) vs. Salubri(Brets) - Balian edges out on this closely fought Balikatan exercise. Look! Horses everywhere!. Critical turn occured when Salubri's grail knight lance failed to combine charges with his mounted yoemen against Balian's grail knights which resulted in a counter-charge that eventually turned the tide. Everybody I think will agree that a house ruling on combined charges and redirecting charges should be discussed to remedy this.
Balian(Brets) vs. Kyuzo(Dark Elves) - Balian wins out on this one against Kyuzo's 120+ model all-infantry list. Why'd you ask Kyuzo thought of going all-infantry with Dark Elves? Because he can! ;) It was enough to give Balian memories of Total War (See previous post).
Salubri(Brets) vs. Kyuzo(Dark Elves) - Salubri wins despite losing his general and paladin on hippogryph to the Dark Elf raiders in the process.

Not much on game highlights was remembered that day because all of that was forgotten at the thought of "Soft white beds with large, soft pillows", which haunted our minds in the middle of the second game. It was enough to distract Balian Salubri to lose their concentration momentarily in my games against them.

Oh, and sigismund passed by but was not able to play. Maybe when I get to push through with my project on 500pt demo armies will he then be able to get started with Fantasy.

We called it a day early since we didn't go play billiards after.

Total War!!!

1/2/2006

I think it's appropriate to have a new blog for our current "alternative" addiction :)

Finally was able to play the games (medieval and rome) last week after having the games discs with me for almost a month... I am back to video gaming madness (my recent record so far is until 4 am!!!)... whew!!! This is all Salubri's fault :)

I skipped medieval after 2 days of playing it and went on to Rome... some learning experiences to date :

1) Hoplites (with the phalanx ability) rock! I can't wait to play as Greeks to be able to have a battle line full of these "men" (you have all watched alexander :)

2) Sometimes, it's better to exterminate a population. Crucify! I learned this the hard way after getting booted out of Carthage just after I won it via a very bloody siege.

3) Prime cities captured - Carthage, Athens, Corinth, Rhodes... next in line is Jerusalem, and I have an army doing nothing but walk and find battles in eastern Europe. Funny listening to the general's speech claiming they are great Romans... he has mostly mercenaries in his command (with hoplites of course). My goal is to have 10 provinces in the general area of my capital, with the rest of the 40 or so coming from Africa, Middle East, Asia Minor, Western Europe. I don't like to go towards Spain for some reason...

4) Survived my first encounter against elephants when I assaulted Carthage itself... yeah you guessed it, Hoplites :)

5) Some captains give better speaches than generals :)

HGR Journal Entry 002...

December 30, 2005

This one's for the books. Unusually high attendance of WFB players came that day with both Saturday and Sunday WFB regulars playing or just passing through. In fact, the attendance was big enough to even hold an impromptu mini-tourney based on the numbers. It was just ironic that NG Galleria was scheduled to close early at 6pm (scheduled company Christmas party) when there are so many players who would want to put some games in. Attendees that day were as follows:

1. Lito (who I understand has left earlier when I arrived)
2. Ryan
3. Emcee
4. Ronald
5. Ian (looking at prospect of crossing over to Fantasy next year)
6. Kim (only passing the time while waiting for the Commander-in-Chief )
7. Jun
8. Clarence
9. Clemence
10. EJ
11. Jeff
12. Gelo
13. Justin
14. Obi (40k player crossing over to Fantasy using Orcs and Goblins!)
15. Romy

Some results that day:

Emcee (Brets) vs. Ryan (Brets) - Result: Ryan's Bretonnians win this Balikatan Exercise
Ryan (Brets) vs. Romy (Dark Elves) - Result: Ryan's Bretonnians prevailed over the Dark Elves today
Ronald (Vampire Counts) vs. Jun (Chaos Khorne) - Result: Vampire Counts win!
Clarence (Vampire Counts) vs. Obi (Orcs and Goblins) - Result: Clarence wins in Obi's first ever WFB game!

Obi just got his push in the right direction in the WFB scene courtesy of Clarence (newly designated WFB newbie rapist? ). Don't worry Dude, everybody falls the first time (take it from a guy who's used to falling. ) Ian has shown interest in starting WFB (maybe Brets *shiver*) and got Ronald (WFB grizzled cheezy veteran) giving the backgrounder and subtle differences between WFB and WH40k game systems well into the night (Ian's interest really got Ronald on a roll. )

The atmosphere was festive that afternoon despite the thought that NG will close early, thanks to Gelo's words of wisdom (and stealthy exit I might add ). Ended up with a game of billiards with some of the guys who wanted to get even before we called it a day. No official scores were tracked by the guys after my 10th straight win. OT: Mental note to restudy my billiard game. I think I'm losing my edge...

HGR Journal Entry 001...

December 26, 2005

Several Galleria regulars wanted to try out Fantasy gaming for a change after the rigors of the previous 40k Glad Cup. Reporting for duty that day were Salubri, The Meanderer, midnight and Kyuzo. Summary of results are as follows:

Salubri (Brets) vs. The Meanderer (Wood Elves) - Win for Bretonnians
midnight (Vampire Counts) vs. Kyuzo (Dark Elves) - Convincing massacre by the Undead
Salubri (Brets) vs. midnight (Vampire Counts) - The Lady favored the Bretonnians that day

Some things of note that day:

1. Although I saw only briefly the game between the Bretonnians and Wood Elves, I would like to note of The Meanderers steady pick up of the Wood Elves' strengths and was able to threaten to envelop the Bretonnian surge as early as the second round. Mental note for me to be wary of this force from Athel Loren the next time we meet.
2. Midnight's Blood Dragons are fierce and difficult to beat. I decided to lay back majority of my troops and sent my dark riders forward as outriders. Midnight's wolves made short work of them and my RBT's were not able to give the support they needed. Midnight noted after the game that my general overextended and is forced to go up against the black knights on its own which led to his eventual demise. Was able to take out at least one of his necromancers but by then my two sorcs died quickly soon after and things went a lot faster from then on. :D
3. Midnight should have invoked more troops and used Van Hel's when the time was appropriate to counter charge Salubri's lances. His magic went full circle on him when he miscast a couple of times in that game (I counted three times I think).
4. It was proven in the above games that players can provide an appropriate amount of magic defense against magic heavy armies.
5. We were all rusty on our knowledge of the rules. Will edit into this post any comments from your post-game analyses.

Some rules/info worth remembering:

a. Units can deny enemy units from marching if they are within 8" at the start of the Movement phase.
b. Spirit hosts, despite 4 attacks per base are US 3 per base.
c. Fast cavalry, when rallying after fleeing as a previous charge reaction, can move in the Remaining Moves portion of the Movement phase. They cannot shoot.

...

After all the trash talking and rules consulting, we then headed off to play a couple of games of billiards to finish the day. Midnight and Salubri showed great competitiveness and did not dissapoint in playing a good game. Results are as follows:

9-Ball Challenge : Kyuzo-14, Midnight-6, Salubri-5
Killers: Kyuzo-2, Midnight-0, Salubri-0

Merry Christmas to the 101st Galleria Regulars! May your dice rolls favor the brave! Hehehe...
